How to Wear a Head Scarf

head scarf

Whether you prefer to refer to them as turbans, head scarfs, or “that headband that hippie girls are wearing this season”, one thing is for sure: they are stylish. Although I never thought I was able to pull them off myself, I decided I might as well try. When Alexandra sent me one of her head scarves from her Etsy shop (and gave one away to a lucky reader) I knew it was time to start wearing it. I don’t look nearly as amazing as the model in her photos did, but hey- I gave it a shot! If you’re looking for cute, affordable and handmade headbands, visit Alexandra’s shop here.

head turban

1. Wear it thick around your head, covering your ears. This is a great way to hide greasy roots or hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or two. I find that sometimes when I wear my hair up or wear a headband, my ears tend to stick out more than normal. Or maybe that’s just me being weird. Either way, this way covers that “problem”.

2. Wear them with your hair up. Sometimes a simple bun or ponytail can be too boring, am I right? A fun way to spruce up the classic look is with a head scarf. Leave bangs or short layers out if you’d like to pin them up and tease them for a retro-inspired look.

3. Wear it criss-crossed and thinner. If you don’t want the head scarf to overwhelm your entire face/hair (especially if you have a small face, like me), you can twist the headband to make it thinner and then place it over the top of your forehead.

So tell me- what do you think of the head scarf/turban trend? How do you wear them?

This is so adorable and you look GORGEOUS wearing it all three ways! I typically just wear it it like #2, but sometimes tie it to make it more of a vintage look. I don’t think I could pull off #1, but you LOOK SO amazing this way. I also would love to try #3! Great post!

I love how #2 looks, but I can never get the scarf to stay put! Do you bobby pin the scarf in place?

    • http://www.lifeunsweetened.com/ Rachel

Mine stay put fine because I had day-old hair, but bobby pins would work, too!

  • FleurdeLyss

You wear them so well! I love headscarfs and turban headbands during the summer, for when I’m either at the beach or just too lazy to actually do my hair. It’s just so easy!

      Thanks Alyssa!

  • withluckblog

I wore a scarf this weekend using option number 2 and I loved it… but I couldn’t get it to stay on my head?! I need to figure out some extra tips and tricks to keep them on all day haha

    • http://www.lifeunsweetened.com/ Rachel

dirty/day old hair helps! try a little dry shampoo or texturing spray. if all else fails, bobby pin it once or twice :)

I adore the knit headband look on other people, but I look like a total goof. I was eyeing someone’s headgear on the beach with envy yesterday…they are so boho chic.

You look super cute all 3 ways – you have the perfect face for a headscarf! (Is that a weird thing to say? I hope you know what I mean hahaha.) I like #1 the best! I need to work at this look more!

    • http://www.lifeunsweetened.com/ Rachel

haha thanks Dani! I take it as a compliment, not weird at all :)

  • http://twitter.com/lizmcavoy Liz McAvoy

You actually inspired me to don the third criss-crossed option yesterday! The DC temps are heating up and any way to dress up my otherwise horrendously frizzly locks while still keeping them out of my face is so appreciated :)

      Awesome!
