I get asked a lot of questions on this blog about everything from what products I use to get my curly hair to how to start your own blog. Here are some of the frequently asked questions and my answers. Feel free to send me some more to add- rachel [at] lifeunsweetened.com
What camera do you use to take your photos?
I use a combination of 3 cameras! For any of my Instagram photos, I use the camera on my iPhone 4. For older posts on my blog (from the year 2012), I used my Canon PowerShot S120. It’s a great camera for those who want to use a point-and-shoot but aren’t ready to invest in a DSLR just yet. For my more recent photos (especially outfit photos and food photos), I use my Canon EOS Rebel T3I. I highly recommend this camera- it’s easy to use and great for beginners! I also use this tripod and remote control that I bought from Amazon in a bundle.
What do you use to edit your photos?
I use Adobe Photoshop CS3. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, I suggest trying Adobe Photoshop Elements or PicMonkey. In terms of a computer, I use my HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook for all of my blogging duties.
I want to start a blog- can you help me?
If I had all the time in the world, I would love to help people get their blogs up and running, but sadly I do not. I do, however, have some recommendations and links to help you make the process easier.
First, you need to choose a blogging platform. If you have even the smallest amount of HTML knowledge or can read a short tutorial, I suggest using WordPress.org since it has way more options and can be customized exactly to your liking. If you want your website to make money or to rank in search engines, WordPress.org is a must (in my opinion).
No matter which platform you use, I suggest purchasing a domain name from Bluehost at the beginning. I’ve used them for over 2 years on both of my websites and find them to be the most reliable at a very decent price (right now it’s only $3.95 a month!) And their customer service rocks.
WordPress comes with a variety of free themes and templates you can use. If you want even more customization and SEO benefits, I suggest using Studiopress. They offer a variety of premium themes and frameworks for clean, sleek website and blog designs. My favorite is the Genesis framework, which I run on both my blog and personal website.
For managing my social media accounts, I suggest purchasing a pro-version of Hootsuite. This saves me SO much time when scheduling posts! To keep your blog/website protected from copyright infringement and theft, purchase the DCMA webmaster tool program for $10 a month.
What do you do for a living?
