Matching Lips & Nails

matching lips and nails

I’ve been known in the past to be a bit matchy-matchy. I was the girl who in middle school had a headband in each and every color, and it always matched my outfit. In high school, my earring collection surpassed that of the local Claire’s — I had a pair in every shade or color combo to match my wardrobe. While I’m certainly not that intense anymore, sometimes I still like to match here and there.

An easy and trendy way to do this is with matching lips and nails. Whether you purchase them separately or in a set together,  choosing similar shades of makeup creates a put-together look. I can’t tell you how many times I get the comment “Oh how cute — your lips and nails match!” (usually from women, since men don’t notice that kind of stuff). Here are some products to get the look yourself. What do you think of matching lips and nails?

Tips for Wearing Matching Lips and Nails

Put on the Lip Color First

It’s much easier to pull of a crazy nail color than it is lip color, so be sure to try it on your lips first. If it passes that test, it’ll likely look good on your nails, too.

Take Your Skin Tone into Account

If you know a particular shade looks good on your skin tone (or with your hair color or eye color), it’s likely that it will look good on both your face and nails.

Look at the Season

If you’re lacking inspiration or are bored with the standard pink shades you wear, look at what lip and nail colors are trending for the season.

Don’t Match it To Your Outfit

You can only match 2 things on your entire body, so decide if that’s matching your nails to your dress or your nails to your lips.

  1. That coral set is soo pretty! I don’t usually wear lipstick since I think it looks weird on me but I often match my manicure to my pedicure!

  2. I think the Nars and the Butter sets are my favorite. I don’t think I’ve ever intentionally matched my nails to my lip color, but I just might give it a shot!

  3. On NYE I really wanted to do a bright pink lip to match my bright pink nails… but it just doesn’t work on me. I wish I could get away with more daring lip colors. I would so do this!

  4. I was so that girl, too! Every bow I wore when I was younger matched the pattern of the bike shorts I was wearing, and then an oversized top (gosh, that’s embarrassing thinking back to my bike short outfit haha). Anyway, this is such a great way to do it! Love the idea of matching nails to lips!

  5. LOVE matching lips and nails! Such a great idea… I unintentionally did that on Sunday 🙂 I really want to try out that canary color! JK I don’t think I could pull that off… love the Butter London nail color!

  6. This is SUCH a huge trend for Spring! I’ve seem so many celebrities doing it and it’s a trend I’ve inadvertently adopted (red lips + red nails.) Love your pairings!

  7. Oh girl you know I love to match too, nothing wrong with that I say! I also really dig this lip nail matching trend!

  8. I hate to admit it but I am a little matchy-matchy as well. We should start an anonymous group. I do like this trend. Especially the Butter Trout Pout.

  9. Haha I totally forgot about matching headbands – I definitely did that too!! Love the Shiap and Trout Pout – both pinks are so fun!

  10. I hate to say this but that yellow is actually really cool.  I would never wear it myself, but it is still super fab in the photo.  And I love your coral combo! I am OBSESSED with coral.  It might be my (third) favorite color. 🙂

  11. Love this idea! I’m obsessed with the Nars color! Need to get my hands on those asap!–and maybe actually start painting my nails! lol

  12. I’ve always admired girls who can match everything so effortlessly, including lipstick and nail polish, but I am anything but matching.  Still I love the idea of it! 🙂

  13. I didn’t even know this was a current trend! Guess I’m not that up on it! But I am really loving the coral shades you selected on the top right.

  14. I think I could try this, but its SO hard for me to find a lip color that I actually like on me!

And I LOVE the fact that you were the matchy matchy girl in school 😉

  15. I love bright red lipstick but I’m not sure I could do it on my hands too – maybe just my toes! 🙂
