What Do Our Dreams Really Mean?

sleeping kitten

Dreams- we all have them. Some of us remember them in great detail, some of us forget them as soon as we wake up, and some of us (like me), have dreams that are so bizarre and disturbing that we wish we could forget them. Over the past 5 years or so, I’d say that my dreams have only gotten weirder. I’ve noticed over time that there a few recurring themes that pop up in my dreams at least once a week.

The concept of dreams themselves is pretty crazy to me, and my naturally curious mind leads me to Google dream analyzing websites to convince myself that I am not in fact crazy, just a quirky dreamer. Here are the three common themes that keep popping up in my dreams, along with what the internet tells me they mean.

Vomiting dreams

Yeah, even the word grosses me out. No one enjoys throwing up, obviously, so dreaming about it over and over is pretty disturbing. I don’t have any traumatic experiences with getting sick in public and I rarely throw up, so I’m not sure why it keeps happening in my dreams. While the experience in real life is pretty gross and uncomfortable, when it happens it my dreams it’s not that way at all. It’s me just opening my mouth and it coming out. In my dreams, the vomit is weird colors (like last week’s purple vomit), consists of weird things come out (like last month’s piece of plastic shapes) and it only happens to me- never others.

What does this mean? “To dream that you are vomiting indicates that you need to reject or discard an aspect of your life that is revolting. There are some emotions or concepts that you need to confront and then let go.” Uh, I can’t think of anything in my life that is “revolting” and needs to be rejected, but maybe I’m missing something?

Hiding dreams

I commonly have dreams- more like nightmares- where I’m hiding from someone or something. Whether it’s a murdered, someone robbing my home or some sort of weird monster, I’m always escaping and trying to hurriedly find hiding places. More times than not, I end up hiding in my closet in my own room and piling clothes on top of me so my body just looks like a lump of dirty laundry. Other times, I’m in unknown places trying to find the smallest hole or table to hide myself in/under as I sit there in fear.

What does this mean? “To dream that you are hiding suggests that you are keeping some secret or withholding some information. You may not be facing up to a situation or dealing with some issue. However, you may be getting ready to reveal something and confess before somebody finds out.” Hmm… again, I can think of a few small things that this might mean, but I don’t have any big or crazy secrets that I’m hiding.

Dreams where people are being mean to me

I constantly have dreams where people- whether they are my friends or complete strangers- are cruel to me. Examples include a teacher humiliating me in front of my entire class, my real-life friends talking about me right in front of my face as if I weren’t there, or a random former classmate ripping me apart for all my flaws. I wake up feeling upset, sad and confused each time, wondering why people would be so cruel for no reason.

What does this mean? “To dream that someone is being mean to you suggests that you are being too hard on yourself. You need to give yourself a break.” I think this is true- this is the only internet definition that makes sense to me.

What weird themes keep popping up in your dream? And what do they mean? I used this site to analyze mine.

  1. I wish I could remember more of my dreams… and seriously that picture is too darn cute (And I don’t even like cats!)

  2. Wow, crazy! I dream about falling a lot, which I hate because it wakes me up. Or I dream about being late for school or unprepared for a test. Ugh.

  3. I’m glad to know that I’m not alone in crazy dreams. I probably have several pretty strange ones a week (that I can actually recall). My husband thinks I’m so strange because he never remembers his and mine are always so vivid!

  4. Wow those dreams do not sound fun! I usually don’t remember my dreams, but when I do lately they seem to revolve around someone I know getting married – just like my real life.

  5. I always have dreams about chewing gum and it starts to multiply in my mouth. I freak out but I can’t spit it out. Not sure what that one means. And I frequently dream about going on a cruise. I think I know what THAT one means. Give me a vacation!

  6. So crazy your post is about this today because literally last night I had the most bizarre dream..ever. SO disturbing you can’t even imagine (well, maybe you can haha). And lately I’ve been having such vivid dreams, so I was going to google things today. Very interesting what you dream about, too! Love the post.

  7. I have weird dreams too! Dean thinks it’s weird that I remember my dreams so often-he feels like he never dreams!

  8. I remember my dreams all the time and they are always really weird!!!!!!!! This interpretations are interesting… and I can see those to be true. (the pic of this kitten is adorable by the way!) Lately I have been having dreams with people that I haven’t talked to in awhile… I like to self diagnose and I think I don’t have closure on those past relationships. Kinda sucks that I can get through the day without thinking about it and them BAM haha, what up weird dreams!

  9. This is so funny, because for the past two weeks I keep having dreams that I’m friends with celebrities. I rarely remember my dreams, so it’s weird that they’ve been so vivid lately. I had a dream that Mila Kunis and I were attending Kim Kardashian’s wedding together. I also regularly dream that Chelsea Handler and I are friends. It’s so strange! I’ll have to figure out what it means.

  10. I almost always remember my dreams and they are usually pretty weird but I can’t think of any constant themes. Last night I dreamt that I crashed a wedding, haha!

  11. this is really interesting! lately i havent’ been able to remember my dreams… hate that! i dream about falling a lot… and fires… those are my least favorite!

  12. This is so interesting Rachel. I actually did a project in college psych where we had to record everything we remembered from out dreams for a month. Then we analyzed the results, it was really different.

  13. Cute pic. šŸ™‚

I hardly ever remember my dreams anymore, which is too bad because they can be so interesting. Flying dreams are always the best.

  14. My dreams are always just totally random! Last week I went on a trip to China with a friend and we ran into an old frenemy. haha – random!

  15. I am so fascinated by dreams! And I love dreaming, haha, that might sound weird. I haven’t quite had any of those dreams before… but I do dream about me running from people a lot – maybe that is the same as hiding. I’ve had the losing teeth dream before too.

  16. That photo is to cute for words!! Thanks for sharing all the info, I often wonder what the weird things I dream about actually mean – I can’t wait to look them up now!
