Why I Watch “The Real Housewives” Series

I’ll admit it: I love watching The Real Housewives series on Bravo. I’ve been tuning in since the first season of Orange County and still can’t get enough. While I have my favorite seasons (the first few New Jersey seasons, the Orange County seasons and the Beverly Hills season ) as well as my least favorites (I couldn’t even get through any of the DC or Atlanta episodes), each show is full of entertainment. Fellow Real Housewives lovers will agree with this post, while others will continue to ask me “Why do you like watching that show?” So haters and curious minds alike, I’m here to tell you why.

I enjoy reality TV

Not all of it (I’m looking at you, Flavor of Love), but I enjoy seeing how people live their lives- especially when it’s so much different than mine. I enjoy watching a story line and learning more about each of the character’s lives and how they may be different or similar to mine. Which brings me to the next reason…

I enjoy watching it because I can relate to it

I know what you’re thinking- how can a poor 24-year old blogger relate to these 40-year-old, Botox-injecting rich women? Well, it’s certainly not for our appearance or income, I can tell you that. What I can relate to is the ups and downs of their lives, particularly the girl drama. Sometimes on these shows, the women know each other beforehand, while other times new women are brought into the show/circle through a mutual friend. This is what usually causes the drama, cat fights and table-flipping. Let’s just say that all girls haven’t always been the nicest to me, so I find myself going through similar situations as the housewives do.

I’ve been talked about behind my back, only to have another friend tell me about it (this happens pretty much in every season of the show). I’ve dealt with girls being jealous of me for the stupidest reasons, including my hair, weight, boyfriend and accomplishments. I’ve been excluded from mutual friend’s get-togethers and had people write nasty things about me on social media. I know what it’s like to try so hard to be friends with women, only to have them hate me for doing just that- being nice. The bottom line is, I can relate to these women, even if our bank accounts and lifestyles are opposites.

I like to look at their clothes, hair, and makeup

Since these women are rich (usually through marriage), they have the ultimate wardrobes. As a fashion blogger, I envy their closets and makeup collections. And I always get inspiration for new hairstyles from them- I’ve stolen far too many of Gretchen from the OC’s hair secrets.

Do you watch the Real Housewives series? Why or why not? Who are your favorites?

  1. I confess I’ve not seen much of the Real Housewives, but I am horribly addicted to some of the similar British programmes (oh, ok then, and Dance Moms!); I think it’s the sheer escapism that I enjoy so much. I could never imagine having all that time and money to care about the things they do, but for 45 minutes they give me mind-boggling entertainment…so I’m not even that ashamed to admit, I’m a fan!

  2. I used to watch it but now I’m not as consistent mostly because I don’t have the time. But I do like housewives of Beverly Hills cause I love Lisa and Brandi. I think it sucks you had to go through that with your girlfriends, I was lucky to always fun and supportive friends that can be happy for me and my accomplishments. One thing I always do, is making sure I’m friends with girl that are confident and secure I think they tend to be less about drama.

  3. I’ve seen exactly one season of the real housewives- and it was the table flipping one. There was a marathon on and I was instantly addicted! I don’t have cable any more, but if I did, I probably wouldn’t turn off any of the episodes.

  4. Haha, I don’t tend to watch them all the time, but for some reason, they are good shows to watch when I’m working out! I can totally understand how you relate on some level and I agree…. completely ENVIOUS of their wardrobes!

  5. I am a complete Housewives Addict as well. Never miss an episode – although totally with you on Atlanta and DC. OC will always be my favorite and on another note Miami has really shocked me with their clothes this season (in a good way) they have some serious dresses!!

  6. Where do I begin with my love of the Housewives? OC is the original/my favorite, followed by NY, NJ, and Miami. And BH. So all of them I guess. i liked Atlanta in the beginning but it is just terrible now. I watched all of DC, but it was painful.

Anyway, I agree that even if there lives are completely different, they are definitely more relatable than an outsider would realize, especially when it comes to the girl/family drama. And with the crazy that is the world today, it’s just nice to watch something that’s a bit dense to unwind/get away from the stress of life.

    1. haha I knew you would enjoy this since you like them! And you’re right- sometimes watching something silly and stupid is just what I need after a long day of work!

  7. Oh my goodness! I love this! The real housweives = my guilty pleasure! I love OC, BH, and NJ too! Vicki is hilarous and I could totally relate to this post:)!

  8. Oh gosh, I’ve been addicted to OC for the last three seasons. I’m right there with you on the hair inspiration from Gretchen, ha!

  9. I hate reality TV. It drives me crazy. It makes me wonder if I have to turn in my girl card, because apparently, we girls all love this stuff.
