Toddler Back-to-School Clothing Picks
Back-to-school shopping has always been fun to me, whether it’s clothes shopping or school supply shopping. Shopping is shopping, after all! Once I had kids, it became even more fun to browse pieces for the fall season and pick out their first-day-of-school outfit.
Since I’m in the northeast, our back-to-school wardrobes are mostly long-sleeve tops and pants with a few remnants from summer mixed in. September is still warm, but once October comes around we’re in full force with the fall clothes.
When it comes to where to shop for back-to-school clothes for toddlers, I have my favorite staple stores: Old Navy, Target, and H&M. I used to really love Carter’s, but have found that their newborn/baby outfits are cuter than those for older toddlers. For splurge pieces, there’s Mini Boden, Nordstrom, Tea Collection, and Hanna Anderson.
Below are some back-to-school clothes for toddler boys and girls, many of which I’ve personally purchased for my own kids this year!
Back-to-School Clothes for Toddler Girls

Denim Pinafore Dress | Frilly Collared Chambray Blouse | Ribbed Long Sleeve T-Shirt | Ruffled Crew Socks | Grosgrain Hair Bow | Short Sleeve Shirt Dress with Pockets | High-Waisted Flare-Leg Pull-On Jeans | Leather T-bar Flats | Short-Sleeve Textured Ruffle-Hem Top | Bow Shirt
My daughter’s back-to-school wardrobe this year is following a few themes: collars, stripes, bows, and denim. I ended up buying a lot of neutrals this year so I can easily mix and match pieces for a lot of new outfit combos. A few of my favorite pieces include:
- These adorable pull-on flare pants. She has short legs and these will just be so adorable on her!
- Lots of collared blouses and tees, similar to this chambray version
- This colorful ruffle-hem blouse, which I also bought in a floral print
Back-to-School Clothes for Toddler Boys

Cosy Rugby Shirt | Woven Pull-On Jogger Pants | Fire Truck Parade Shirt | Oversized Long-Sleeve Striped T-Shirt | Faux-Leather Lace-Up Sneakers | Piqué Polo Shirt | Long-Sleeve Polo Shirt | Heather Gray Sweatpants | Colorblock Baseball Crewneck
My 4-year-old son still lets me dress him and doesn’t have an opinion on his clothes just yet, so shopping is still fairly fun for me. As he’s aged out of the cutesy boy pieces (and physically grown out of those pieces!), we end up with a bunch of stripes, pieces with pockets, and crewnecks. A few of my favorite pieces of boy’s clothing we own are:
- These jogger pants. I buy them in every color and they last an entire year or more (which is a miracle for a toddler at daycare – most of his pants come back with wear and tear in the knees specifically). They fit and wear like joggers but have the look of a khaki.
- Rugby striped shirts like this one. Something about them just looks so cute on toddlers!
- Baseball tees and crewneck styles. I find these super flattering and a nice alterative to a plain old T-shirt. This top has both in one!
